Argonne National Laboratory

Argonne National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center working to “answer the biggest questions facing humanity, from how to obtain affordable clean energy to protecting ourselves and our environment.”

Collaborates with hundreds of research partners to lead discovery in a wide range of disciplines.
Includes 5 national user facilities that further science on a scale too vast for a single organization to maintain.
Operated by the University of Chicago and born out of the University’s work on the Manhattan Project.

National Science Foundation

The NSF is a federal agency that supports fundamental research and education in all fields of science and engineering. Support is given "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense..."

A major source for approximately 24 percent of federally supported researchers.
Issues competitive grants to support collaborations that lead to novel innovation.
Operates “bottom up” in keeping close ties with the research community.

The University of Chicago

The University of Chicago is an urban research university founded in 1890 that has led to many breakthroughs over the past 100 years. University of Chicago’s positive influence on research and knowledge reaches far and wide, from its expanding medical center to its affiliation with national laboratories.

The Sandia National Laboratories (SNL)

The Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) is one of National Nuclear Security Administration research and development laboratories. Along with SNL’s primary mission to maintain the reliability of nuclear weapon systems, Sandia is home to a variety of research including cognitive science initiatives. SNL accomplishes tasks that are integral to the mission by:

anticipating and resolving emerging national security challenges
innovating and discovering new technologies to strengthen the nation’s technological superiority
creating value through products and services that solve important national security challenges
informing the national debate where technology policy is critical to preserving security and freedom throughout our world

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is one of the United States Department of Energy national laboratories, dedicated to advancing the frontiers of science and addressing some of the most challenging problems in energy, the environment and national security. PNNL has been operated by Battelle and its predecessors since their inception in 1965. At PNNL, our researchers provide national leadership in four areas:

deepening our understanding of climate science
inventing the future power grid
preventing nuclear proliferation
speeding environmental remediation.

The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab)

The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is managed by the University of California and is charged with conducting research across a wide range of scientific fields. Primarily, Berkeley Lab fosters groundbreaking science that enables transformational solutions for energy and environment challenges.

About 10,000 researches use Berkley Lab’s User facilities a year, representing nearly one third of the total for all Department of Energy Office of Science User Facilities.
Berkeley Lab has a tradition of multidisciplinary teams working together to bring science solutions to the world
Thirteen Nobel prizes are associated with Berkeley Lab.

The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL)

The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) is dedicated to scientific discovery – exploring fundamental biology, understanding biodiversity and the environment, and informing the human condition through research and education. Founded in Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 1888, the MBL is a private, nonprofit institution and an affiliate of the University of Chicago. Research at MBL focuses on a number of distinctive themes, including:

new discoveries emerging from the study of novel marine organisms, encompassing research in regenerative biology, neuroscience, sensory physiology, and comparative evolution and genomics
the study of microbiomes and microbial diversity and ecology in a variety of ocean and terrestrial habitats
cutting-edge imaging and computation, making the unseen visible to illuminate cellular function and to explore biological mechanisms
organismal adaptation and resilience in the face of global climate change and rapidly changing ecosystems.
